Crystal Strikes Out in New Career
In related news:
Following that proud Toronto sporting tradition of signing players in the twilight of their careers, the Toronto Blue Jays signed 35-year old Armando Benitez. The closer is in his 15th season in the majors. Last season, he ended the year with a win-loss record of 2-8 and an ERA of 5.37. The Blue Jays made sure to mention that he did save 47 games...in 2004.
Apparently, Benitez joined the team after his agent called the Blue Jays and said that Benitez is looking for a job. J.P. Ricciardi, general manager of the Blue Jays, told the agent to "bring him up and we'll watch him throw and we'll see how he looks." After watching Benitez throw the ball in the bullpen, Ricciardi said this about the new acquisition: "He threw the ball well...but he's still not in shape. He's got a lot of experience behind him. Obviously we're not looking for him to be a closer. We've got guys who can fill that role."
Now there's a ringing endorsement.
P.S. Yes, I do enjoy baseball and will blog about it occasionally. You don't need to point out how boring it is...I already know that :).

1. Baseball is not boring, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
2. J.P. has the i.q. of a bag of rocks.
Thanks for your comment, Megan. Yes, J.P. is a moron. How I long for the Blue Jays of 1992 and 1993...
